Legal Unit

The Legal Unit within the Ministry of Lands holds a pivotal role as an indispensable department integral to the overall functioning of the ministry. Charged with the crucial responsibility of managing and supervising all facets of legal documentation, litigation, legal advisory, and providing comprehensive legal services, the Legal Unit operates as the legal arm of the Ministry of Lands.

Its mandate extends across a spectrum of activities, ranging from meticulously handling legal documentation to offering strategic legal advice and engaging in litigation processes when necessary. The significance of this unit cannot be overstated, as it forms the bedrock upon which the Ministry of Lands operates. Its exhaustive responsibilities ensure the ministry’s compliance with legal norms, safeguarding its operations, and contributing to the overarching goal of maintaining legality and equity within the realm of land management. In essence, the Legal Unit serves as the cornerstone, without which the Ministry of Lands would lack the necessary legal foundation to fulfill its essential functions.
Some of the functions of the Legal unit includes:

To vet, scrutinize, draft and execute legal documents, memorandum, letters, agreements, files, notices etc.
To offer legal advice and directives on knotty legal issues bedeviling the ministry or where such circumstances arise and legal opinion is needed on the way forward.
To represent the Ministry in various litigations pending before the various hierarchies of our courts.
To arbitrate and give legal advice and directives on conflict resolutions in land matters concerning various parties and the Ministry of Lands.
To coordinate and liaise with other Government agencies & interested parties especially the Ministry of Justice in getting needed facts, documents, & witnesses to represent Government cases in courts and other affairs.
To generally offer legal services on all legal issues pertaining to the Ministry of lands.
